6 Best Notion AI Alternatives for Team Wikis

Need a Notion AI alternative for your team wiki? We compare six tools, including Docmost and Confluence, on AI features, self-hosting, and price.

TL;DR

  • Full Notion AI now comes with the Business plan at $20 per member a month, billed annually. The Free and Plus plans only get a limited trial.
  • Notion AI is a strong writing and search assistant, but it runs in Notion's cloud, with no option to host it yourself or use your own model.
  • Confluence, Superhuman Docs (formerly Coda), Slite, Guru, and ClickUp Docs each handle AI in a wiki differently, from cited search answers to AI inside tables.
  • Docmost is the only tool on this list that can run its AI on a local model through Ollama, on infrastructure you control.

Notion AI adds writing help, answers drawn from the pages in your workspace, and meeting notes to a team wiki. But full access requires the Business plan, and Notion AI runs only in Notion's cloud, so it doesn't work for every team. This post compares six wiki and knowledge base tools with built-in AI, covering what each one's AI does, how it's priced, and which kind of team it fits.

What Notion AI Is Missing for Team Wikis

Notion AI handles writing, answering questions from the pages in your workspace, and meeting notes. But when your team needs something Notion's setup doesn't allow, each tool in this post fills one of those gaps.

If you're still choosing between the wikis themselves before AI enters the picture, see how Notion compares to Confluence for team documentation.

It Only Runs in Notion's Cloud

  • Notion AI runs through Notion's cloud and the AI providers Notion has partnered with. There's no version you can host yourself.
  • You can't connect it to your own model, local or otherwise.

Full AI Moved to the Business Plan

  • The Free and Plus plans include a limited AI trial. Plus costs $10 per member a month, billed annually.
  • Full access, including Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, and Enterprise Search, comes with the Business plan at $20 per member a month, billed annually.
  1. Docmost: Best for Self-Hosted AI You Control

Docmost is an open-source wiki with two of the same AI features as Notion AI: writing help and answers from your workspace. The difference, however, is where the AI runs. You choose the provider, and that can be a model running on your own servers.

Ask AI in the Editor

Select some text or type your own prompt, and Ask AI can:

  • Improve the writing or fix spelling and grammar
  • Make text longer or shorter, or continue writing where you stopped
  • Explain or summarize a passage
  • Change the tone to professional, casual, or friendly
  • Translate into supported languages, including Spanish, German, French, and Japanese

AI Answers in Search

Ask a question, and AI Answers searches your workspace and writes an answer from the pages it finds. It matches your question to pages by meaning, not only by exact words. It only searches content the person asking has permission to see, so private spaces stay private.

Example Search: What's our process for handling production incidents? AI Answers: An answer written from the incident pages in the spaces you have access to.

Pick Your Own AI Provider

  • OpenAI or Azure OpenAI
  • Google Gemini
  • Local models through Ollama
  • Other OpenAI-compatible providers

AI comes with Docmost's paid edition, which requires a license key, and a workspace admin needs to set up a provider before anyone can use it. It isn't part of the free, open-source edition. For current plans and pricing, see Docmost's pricing page.

What You Need to Turn on Docmost AI

  • PostgreSQL with the pgvector extension, which stores the search data AI Answers uses. If you run Docmost's default Docker setup, you'll need to switch to a PostgreSQL image that includes pgvector, and the docs suggest backing up your database first.
  • An account with an AI provider such as OpenAI or Google Gemini, or your own Ollama setup.
  • A workspace admin to turn on AI-powered search under Settings, then AI settings.

Once it's on, Docmost processes your existing pages in the background. New and updated pages are processed about 10 minutes after each change.

What Self-Hosting Means for Your AI

When you run Docmost on your own servers and connect a local model through Ollama:

  • Your data never leaves infrastructure you control.
  • You define your own compliance posture, including access controls, encryption, and retention, instead of inheriting a vendor's.
  • Hosting, backups, upgrades, and security patching become your IT team's responsibility.
  1. Confluence: Best for Teams Already on Atlassian

Confluence's AI is called Rovo, and it's built into Atlassian's cloud plans. Rovo can draft pages from a prompt, summarize pages, and search across Confluence, Jira, and connected apps such as Slack and Google Drive. It can also rewrite, shorten, or translate text you highlight, and it runs agents that take actions for you. And because it's part of Atlassian's cloud, the AI runs on Atlassian's servers.

  • Rovo Search, Chat, and Agents come with the Standard, Premium, and Enterprise cloud plans. Standard starts at $5.42 per user a month.
  • Chat and agent requests use credits from a monthly allowance. Standard includes 25 credits per user a month for Confluence. Everyone in your organization shares them, and they add to the credits from any other Atlassian apps you use, like Jira. Rovo Search doesn't use credits.
  • Atlassian is retiring Confluence Data Center on March 28, 2029, so there's no self-hosted Confluence going forward.
  • Makes the most sense if your team already works in Jira and wants one AI that searches both tools.

Rovo Credits After December 2026

  • Starting December 3, 2026, Atlassian bills for usage past your included credits at $10 per 1,000 credits.
  • Extra usage is on by default. Admins can set spending limits or turn it off.
  1. Superhuman Docs (Formerly Coda): Best for Database-Heavy Docs With AI

Coda became Superhuman Docs on July 8, 2026, after its parent company, Grammarly, renamed itself Superhuman. It now has an AI assistant, called Docs AI, inside the doc you're editing. Docs AI is still in beta.

  • Docs AI can build tables and trackers, pull insights from your whole workspace, and edit your writing. AI table columns can fill in data row by row.
  • Billing is per Doc Maker (someone who can create docs and pages, and use Docs AI), so people who only edit or view existing docs aren't billed.
  • The Pro plan starts at $12 per Doc Maker a month, billed annually. New customers get it as part of the Superhuman suite.
  • Choose it if your team's wiki is built from connected databases instead of pages.
  1. Slite: Best for AI Search Over Docs You Already Have

Slite built its AI around finding answers in the docs you already have. Its Ask feature answers questions from your knowledge base and shows which pages each answer came from.

  • AI writing help is included, and it's unlimited on the Pro plan.
  • On Pro, the Slite Agent checks your docs against connected tools like Slack and GitHub, spots outdated content, and drafts fixes for someone to approve.
  • Plans start at $10 per user a month, billed annually. There's no free plan, only a 14-day trial.
  • Good fit if your docs exist but nobody can find the right one.

For a closer look at what each Slite plan includes, we compared Slite and Slab on what you get at each price.

  1. Guru: Best for Verified AI Answers

Guru puts most of its effort into keeping answers correct. Each card, Guru's word for a page, can have an assigned verifier and a verification schedule. The AI uses that verification as a trust signal when it answers.

  • Knowledge Agents give cited, permission-aware answers, and search covers all your connected knowledge.
  • Assist, Guru's writing tool, can draft, rewrite, summarize, and translate cards.
  • Guru doesn't list prices. Its pricing page describes a package built around your organization, and you'll need to talk to its sales team.
  • Guru fits teams that need the accuracy of every answer more than anything else.
  1. ClickUp Docs: Best for Teams Already Running ClickUp

ClickUp Docs lives inside ClickUp's project management platform, so your docs sit next to your tasks. The AI, called Brain AI, is sold separately.

  • Brain AI includes AI chat, AI writing, and search across your workspace.
  • Base plans only include a limited Brain AI trial. Full use is an add-on, and the fee applies to all members of your workspace.
  • The Unlimited plan starts at $7 per user a month, and Brain AI adds $9 per user a month, both billed annually.
  • Good fit if your team's docs and task tracking already live in ClickUp.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What's the Difference Between Notion AI and Docmost AI?

Both help you write and answer questions from the pages in your workspace. The difference is where the AI runs. Notion AI runs in Notion's cloud, while Docmost lets you choose the provider, including a local model on your own servers.

  1. Can Docmost AI Run on a Local Model?

Yes. Docmost connects to local models through Ollama. Its setup docs use nomic-embed-text for search and qwen2.5:7b for answers as examples. You can use any model Ollama supports, depending on how much computing power you have.

  1. Does Docmost AI Cost Extra on Top of the Paid Edition?

Not from Docmost. AI is included in the paid edition. You do need an admin to connect a provider, and if you pick a cloud provider like OpenAI or Gemini, their usage fees apply separately.

  1. Can You Use Confluence AI With Confluence Data Center?

Yes, through a connector. Atlassian's Rovo connector syncs content from Confluence Data Center into the cloud, where Rovo can use it. You need an active cloud Premium or Enterprise plan to use it, and the AI itself still runs in Atlassian's cloud.

  1. Can I Import Notion Pages Into Docmost?

Yes. Export your workspace or pages from Notion as a ZIP file, then open Docmost's import dialog, choose Notion, and upload the file. Docmost creates the pages and keeps the page structure.

  1. Is Superhuman Docs the Same as Coda?

Yes. Coda was renamed Superhuman Docs on July 8, 2026, after Grammarly rebranded itself as Superhuman. Existing customers keep their current plan and pricing, and new customers get Docs as part of the Superhuman suite.
